Honing Guides

0-1 inch honing guide

The Richard Kell no. 1 guide Capacity 0 - 1 inch

Designed to cope with narrow, short blade or Japanese chisels, capacity zero to one inch. Unlike a lot of other guides the relevant working underside of the chisel is used as the correct and repeatable datum, making contact with the guides two stainless steel location rods. The rollers are expensive 'Ertalyte TX' low friction material, self lubricating. Full instructions included. Hint: place cutting edge closest to operator and hone on the push stroke.

My no.1 guide can cope with wood engravers burins or gravers. Produces a very flat crisp rake face. Also, the no.1 guide is highly prized by woodwind players for sharpening their reed-making apparatus.

Richard Kell no.2 LGE

Large rollers make the Richard Kell no.2 LGE an absolute winner. It will easily handle the narrowest to the largest and its clever and unique location method coupled with the excellent side clamping ensures 'spot-on' fast results. Hint: have cutting edge closest to operator and hone on the pushstroke, provides remarkable control and feedback.  My guides are the quickest most easily repeatable of any guide on offer. Capacity zero to 2-5/8 inch ie 70mm. From Aug 2013 this is the new standard issue ie no.2 LGE. Warning - circlips can be dangerous, you must wear eye protection and clear others from the area.  E&OE richardkell.co.uk 2024. No liability can be accepted.  Background info see my blog richardkell.livejournal.com.

0 - 2 5/8 inch honing guide

Conventional and skew honing guide

Here is illustrated my Mk1 version. From autumn 2005 I've available a Mk2 version which is without the sprung pin and associated housing. Note that the two hardened and ground steel pins will still enable you to 'space off' any skew desired. Hint: have the cutting edge closest to operator and hone on the pushstroke, much better feedback and control.

Richard Kell no.3 Guide Capacity 0 - 2-5/8 inch

Richard Kell conventional and skew honing guide. As with all my guides, uniquely the correct working face is used as the datum. Two very accurate hardened steel dowels provide the 90° datum for plane irons and chisels. The spring loaded pin (visible as the turned spring housing at upper surface of datum plate) provides location for Lie Nielsen skew blades, otherwise any skew R.H. or L.H. can be held by using a slip of hardwood against the appropriate steel dowel. The clamping is by a wooden wedge, pattern provided, and is the fastest way to clamp - just as in an old-time wooden plane. Full and comprehensive leaflet included. Exceptional quality in solid brass and stainless steel. For example, the large datum plate is made from engravers 'compo' sheet which is guaranteed much flatter than any usual brass sheet. Costs more but worth it. Capacity 0 to 2-5/8 inch width.

Retro-fit LGE Rollers

Retro-fit LGE Rollers

Enables my small roller no.1 or no.2 to be converted to large roller working. I continue to offer no.1 as small roller as standard and from Aug 2013 no.2 LGE is large roller, each has their uses and applications, my no.1 is a hit with users of narrow chisels and woodwind players making their own reeds. Warning - circlips can be dangerous, you must wear eye protection and clear others from the area. No liability will be accepted. No.3 Guide for Big Mortice Chisels

This is a new version (autumn 2012) of my no.3 mk2 ie the simplified (no sprung pin for Lie Nielsen skew blades) with an increased working gap to cope with deep section mortice chisels. Note chisel projection distances have to be increased accordingly, my user notes will detail this change. This further development of my no.3 guide increases the 'throat' or space available for chisel and wedge to 13/16 inch ie 21mm from my usual 7/16 inch ie 11mm. Tip: a slip of paper does a good job of eliminating any slip or movement between the chisel / iron and brass plate and two wedges will cope with all you need, there is no such thing as 'all those wedges' and  recommended profile / taper include with the info sheet. Massive sturdy wheel spacing ensures the jig is master of the tool. Should you wish to retro- fit upgrade your existing guide to 'deeper working' I can supply an upgrade kit of longer screws and spacers £9.00 excl vat

Price £65.74 ex vat.

No.3 upgrade kit for deeper working throat. Price £9.00 ex vat.
